What Is Botox & Dermal Fillers?
Neurotoxin injections and hyaluronic acid fillers are the most popular non-surgical cosmetic treatments — reducing wrinkles, restoring volume, and enhancing contours with minimal downtime.
Neurotoxins: Botox, Dysport, Xeomin, Daxxify
All four FDA-approved neurotoxins temporarily block nerve signals that cause expression lines. Botox is the most studied. Dysport may spread slightly more. Xeomin has no accessory proteins. Daxxify lasts 6–9 months vs. 3–4 for the others. Pricing should be per unit — per-area pricing obscures actual unit cost.
Hyaluronic Acid Fillers
HA fillers (Juvederm, Restylane) add volume and smooth lines. They're reversible — hyaluronidase dissolves HA fillers if results are unsatisfactory. Common uses: lips, nasolabial folds, under-eye hollows, cheek augmentation, jawline definition, and non-surgical rhinoplasty.
Choosing Your Injector
Injectable treatments are medical procedures with real risks — vascular occlusion is the most serious complication. Injectors should be licensed RNs, NPs, PAs, or MDs trained in facial anatomy and vascular risk. Ask about training, monthly injection volume, and complication management protocol.
What to Expect
Neurotoxin injections take 5–15 minutes. Results appear in 3–7 days, last 3–4 months (Daxxify 6–9 months). Filler injections take 30–60 minutes with numbing. Results are immediate, with swelling peaking at 24–48 hours and resolving in 1–2 weeks.
What to Look for in a Med Spa Provider
- Licensed physician (MD or DO) serving as medical director — verifiable on your state's medical board
- Injectors with proper licensure: RN, NP, PA, or MD — not aestheticians for injectables
- Authentic brand-name products — ask to see the vial (Allergan, Galderma, Merz labels)
- Clean, clinical environment with proper sharps disposal and sterile technique
- Thorough consultation and medical history review before any procedure
- Clear pricing with no surprise fees or high-pressure upsells

Botox is $12–$20/unit. A forehead treatment uses 10–30 units, glabella (11s) 20–25 units, crow's feet 10–15 units per side. A full upper-face treatment typically runs $400–$800. Be cautious of per-area pricing — ask how many units are included.
Very fine needles and seconds per injection — most patients describe mild pinching. Filler injections (especially lips and tear trough) are more uncomfortable and routinely done with topical numbing or dental blocks.
Botox relaxes muscles to soften dynamic wrinkles from expression (forehead, 11s, crow's feet). Fillers add volume to static wrinkles and hollows (lips, cheeks, nasolabial folds, under-eye). They address different problems and are often used together.
Lips: 6–12 months. Nasolabial folds: 12–18 months. Cheeks: 18–24 months. Under-eye: 12–24 months. Biostimulators (Sculptra, Radiesse): 2–3 years. Individual metabolism and area affect duration.
